Having morning sickness can make it hard to enjoy your pregnancy. And for some people, morning sickness can happen at any time of the day, not just in the mornings. Some women suffer more than others. For one woman it can be a bit of nausea in the morning, and for others it may be constant vomiting. Many people have their own morning sickness remedies, from doctors to mothers to friends and neighbors. You need to find the remedy that is going to work for you.
Start by watching what you eat. Avoid foods that are high in fat, they may turn your stomach and make you feel queasy. Increase your protein intake as protein takes longer to digest therefore keeping your stomach occupied longer. Keep a journal of what foods you ate before you started feeling sick and eliminate those foods from your diet. Certain foods such as citrus juices, caffeinated teas and coffee are known to make morning sickness worse, avoid those.
Taking vitamin B6 or B12 can help alleviate some of the morning sickness symptoms especially the vomiting. Check with your doctor before taking vitamins to ensure that they are safe for you and that you get the correct dosage.
Ginger is a well-known aid in helping settle a stomach. Ginger and ginger ale have been recommended as morning sickness remedies for years, though ginger ale does contain sugar so you will want to keep an eye on how much of it you drink. A way to avoid the sugar while still getting the benefit of sugar is to take a ginger capsule or even drinking freshly grated ginger tea.
Some aromas will turn your stomach. Avoid foods that have strong smells like curries or food containing strong smelling spices that may trigger a gag reflex or dry heaving. Other smells such as exhaust or new paint may also make you sick. Be vigilant and keep track of your morning sickness triggers.
Other ancient and well known morning sickness remedies include acupressure. Since pressure points are known to affect the body, and not just for morning sickness, acupressure might help with the symptoms. Or, if not an acupressure session, try a sea band, which puts pressure on the inside of your wrist. Many women have found that this small aid has helped them greatly. You can buy them in almost any drugstore.
Try eating many smaller meals during rather than three larger ones. The point is to keep your stomach constantly full and busy with digestion. Don’t eat too much, though, because that, too, might cause morning sickness. Have you thought of eating before you even get out of bed? Keep some crackers next to the bed. After eating, give your body a few minutes to settle before getting up and getting ready for your day.
And don’t forget to drink plenty of water! Hydration is among the often overlooked morning sickness remedies, which not only helps keep your stomach busy but keeps you hydrated. Find a fluid that works well for you. Try water, broth, caffeine free tea, or even juices.
Get plenty of rest and try to relax. Stress and fatigue contribute immensely to morning sickness.
You should be feeling nothing but joy when you are pregnant. Don’t let morning sickness take that away from you!
