Almost every woman will experience a yeast infection at some point in her life. Yeast infections are caused by an imbalance of candida albicans fungus in the vagina. Small amounts of yeast are often present in the vagina, but when they multiply then women can start to experience the symptoms of what is commonly known as thrush. There is plenty of medication for yeast infection treatment that is available through your pharmacy.
If you are experiencing intense itching, redness, swelling or even burning in the vaginal area, then it is most likely that you have thrush. The infection is usually accompanied by a thick yogurt like discharge that smells like yeast. If the yeast infection is severe enough it may even make going to the bathroom or sex painful and unpleasant until the infection is treated.
Yeast infections are not considered an STD, but arise from an imbalance in the body that can be caused by taking antibiotics, being run down, the contraceptive pill, menstruation, deodorants or soaps that may alter the PH balance of the skin, tight or synthetic clothing or pregnancy.
Luckily, there are several kinds of medication for yeast infection treatment. They are available from the pharmacy and you do not usually need a doctor’s prescription for them. If you find that you are having regular outbreaks of thrush, however, you should visit your doctor to rule out it being caused by something else or that you have an STD.
There are three types of medication for yeast infection: tablets, pessaries and creams. Pessaries are dissolvable tablets that are inserted into the vagina.
One of the most popular yeast infection treatments is clotrimazole 2% cream. This is safe for use in pregnancy and it works by preventing the yeast infection from growing and multiplying. Clotrimazole is available in pessary form as well. Some women prefer pessaries as they have a long lasting effect. Some woemen prefer the cream as it is very soothing - starting to work immediately. These days you can also purchase du packs that come with a pessary and a cream in the same box. Other antifungal creams that can treat yeast infections include: miconazole, mycostatin and nystatin.
There is now an oral tablet that is taken once only as a medication for yeast infection treatment. Fluconazole is the drug name of the medication. It is taken orally once and kills candida that is causing the itching and discomfort. Some women prefer this treatment because they do not want to use messy creams.
Most women will experience a yeast infection at least one time in their lives. Fortunately candida is easy to treat and there are many different kinds of medication for yeast infection treatment. If you have a partner, you should also get a cream for them to use so they do not pass the infection back to you after you have treated yourself.
