Seasonal affective disorder generally occurs during the change of a season. It most commonly affects people during the winter months. Seasonal affective disorder is also known as ‘winter blues, or ‘winter depression’. What happens to a person who is suffering from seasonal affective disorder is that they suffer a serious mood swing.
Symptoms of this disorder include waking up late, taking long naps, over eating, especially carbohydrates, feeling lethargic, stopping work, or leaving tasks unfinished. They tend to suffer from gloom, become uncommunicative, prevent meeting family, friends, and ignore social activities. Depression, pessimism, and lack of pleasure are common results.
It usually occurs in winter, but can also happen during other seasons, like spring, summer, or autumn. This mental disorder was complicated to diagnose or treat initially, and hence, it came to be called ‘the blues’. It generally only lasts for a short while, after which, people resume their normal lives. The explanation behind why they went into this state is usually not obvious.
Various methods are tried to try to help people to overcome this disorder. Therapies, medication, ionised air administration, and light treatment are a few methods tried to treat seasonal affective disorder. It can be simply diagnosed since an individual is aware that his or her routine has changed: When he or she does not want to leave the bed, or gets up, and does not wish to interact.
You can tell that something is not right if you start over eating, and withdraw into a shell. If you are not physically sick, you can either enclose yourself in a shell, or let the disorder run its course, or you can find help. People suffering from seasonal affective disorder are generally not aware of it, feeling that they are suffering from depression, which will pass gradually. If a child is suffering from this disorder, the parents will ask for advice in reference to this. A friend or a family member can help an adult by taking him/her to see a doctor.
The cause of the disorder is still not clear, and some believe that shortage of food, shortened daylight hours resulted in a depression among some of our ancestors. A few people link seasonal affective disorder with hibernation, which is the inclination that has filtered down. Therefore, different methods are experimented with in order to find a cure.
Lights are used to produce more illumination, in order to avoid the effect given by shortened days. However, no conclusive reason for its cause, and no permanent cure, exists. The only thing one can do is to make sure that the person does not suffer from a severe depression, and is kept busy, and thus mentally occupied.
If during a change in season, you find that your body is becoming overly tired, and you just do not feel like doing anything, then you may be suffering from seasonal affective disorder.
