Indeed there are six cold sore stages, but most books and guides discuss the five cold sore stages only. The sixth stage, which is really the first one, never has any symptoms or causes any pain. This is in fact the latent stage, in which the cold sore is simply latent. At this point the herpes virus that’s responsible for cold sores is not active and is hiding in the nerve ganglia. About 33 percent of the individuals who are infected with the virus stay in this stage, where there is no pain, and they normally do not even know that they carry the infection in their body. A latent cold sore’s ability to stay dormant for so long makes it necessary to conduct a blood test to see if some individuals have it. If you are in this stage of cold sore development, you need not do anything about it, not even take any drugs, for the virus remains latent.
